What makes Christmas Day
such a special day?
This day of lies
and compromise
The day we say things like:
It’s no bother.
I’m happy to…
Of course, you’re welcome!
I love it! It’s perfect! It’s what I always wanted!
The day we eat a hot roast lunch
Because that’s what Father wants
We put up with the smell of prawns
It’s what Uncle Trevor wants
We put up with Uncle Trevor
It’s what Aunt Angie wants!
Grandpa nods off after lunch
The other men play cricket
Grandma’s told to just sit down
The women do the dishes
There’s too much food and too much beer
And too much noise and Christmas cheer
The tree is decked with bells and balls
And someone’s singing Deck the Halls
There’s a kid reciting “On Cupid, On Comet”
Another is covered in pudding vomit
The teenaged cousins have all absconded
I love it!
It’s perfect!
What I’ve always wanted!
It’s no bother.
No, I’m happy to…
Of course, you’re welcome!
See you next year
